5 Easy Steps For Making Marshmallow Taffy

By: Amir Mubarak

I'm sure everyone in school is working or already worked on this exercise. The aim of this is to see if we are able to communicate effectively - not verbally - but through writing. So after you take my step-by-step guide I would appreciate it if you could tell me below if you were able to make marshmallow taffy successfully and what you think my instructions are missing. Are they concise, thorough, etc?

*We all know a marshmallow is shaped like a cylinder, and we know that a cylinder is formed by a rectangle sandwiched by two spherical surfaces.

1) Place one of your thumbs on the bottom spherical surface and one of your index fingers on the top spherical surface.
2) Then, place the other thumb and index finger on different ends, each 180 degrees apart from each other on the rectangular part of the marshmallow.
3) Now, with these four fingers, begin to smash and sandwich the marshmallow until it becomes like chewed gum.

4) Now hold the deformed marshmallow and use one hand to stretch a part of the marshmallow away from the hand that is currently holding the other half.

5) Finally, let your hands switch roles. The hand that was grabbing will now stretch, and the hand that was stretching will now grab. Repeat steps four and five until the marshmallow becomes sticky and smooth-looking, and you've got marshmallow taffy!

  1. Hahaha it was really difficult to explain how to make marshmallow taffy. It was really fun to make it. But it was too disgusting to eat.. Well that is my opinion but I think many others likes to eat it.

  4. It was really fun to make a marshmallow taffy but bad thing was that I had to wash my hands after eating it. However I would never try it in my house because my mom will kick me out if I eat it like that. And by the way the original marshmallow is better than taffy

  6. Your instructions were very clear, and probably if I had a marshmallow with me at the moment I would be able to make the taffy. Even though I didn't do this, I think this is a good writing exercise to learn how to communicate with concise language, and not get too complicated so the reader doesn't understand. But one thing I can't stand in instructions on how to do things is when they use degrees. Anyways, that's it.

***Note to future commenters: focus on if his instructions were clear or not, not whether you like marshmallows or not or whatever!!!***

  7. Good job Amir. I think if I had a marshmallow and followed these instructions, I would probably end up with some taffy. I think that the vocabulary you used for your instructions were a little bit too complex, and one of the main points for technical writing is to be clear. Other than that, you did really good on your technical writing. Congratulations!!!

  10. i like marshmallows. most of the time. yesterday i was making hot chocolate and i stuck some marshmallows in the pot to boil. turns out that marshmallows boil over the pan and fill the kitchen with smoke when you stick them into boiling water. so i had to make another pot of hot chocolate. in the end, i ended up drinking several hot chocolates throughout the night. it helps on sunday night when you're depressed that you have to go to school the next morning, especially if you havent finished your math set.

oh, and your instructions are cool too

  12. well at the beginning i got confused. You see i placed a thumb on the bottom, but i placed the index finger of the other hand on top. That messed me up...

  13. Well, I got confused. I ended up doing the same thing that happened to Gaby. :( The instructions weren't very concise on that part. Thanks a lot Gaby cause you also confused me!!!

  14. you could explain what was the purpose of the final products, but I got confused and lost in some parts. Specially in the part were you say that the fingers should be 180 degrees apart from each other. I'm sure that there are many people that wouldn't be able to understand some things.

  15. I enjoyed this experiment. It was fun to do it and it was also fun to see other people trying to do it. For me the best part was probably the sticky fingers, jajajaja. Well I really liked this, and I wish we have more of this kinds of experiments in school.
