Home

Back when Mr. Pereira and I first created this blog, I posted this video that explores the idea of homes and the role they play in our lives. However, because it was one of my first posts, no one was commenting on it. That is a shame, because it is one awesome video. So I decided to bring it back for you guys to observe and enjoy. Think of it as a blog's greatest hits.

This video comes to us from thismustbetheplace, a web video series about how different people define what a home is. Clearly Chong Gon Byun here, a Korean living in Brooklyn, at least partially defines home as a work of art. But what I like about this video, the reason I think it is interesting, is the way in which it focuses only on details. Byun doesn't ever say, "My opinion of home is . . ." Rather, the camera overwhems the viewer with details and allows them to draw their own conclusions. I think this method really invites the viewer in.

  1. wow! I think that this man's home is really amazing! I agree with him when he says that if you put all the objects that he has together, you can create millions of stories!! I would love to leave in a place like his!

  2. Indeed, this video is really awesome. It is impressive to see that even if everyone else thinks he lives alone, he does not. He cares for his things, for his art, and they are a part of him, his home.

  3. I really liked his house, specially when he said that, every time he wakes up he goes to them and ask them " did you sleep well?" just to give them some love. If i lived there, i would be scared, waiting until they come to life, and eat me or kill me. Its an awesome house but, i would prefer to live in another house a normal house.

  4. I think all the stuff he has is very artistic. At the same time it is all very creepy. I guess to him home is where and what you make it. That is why he surrounds himself with what he makes.

  5. I'm not sure that I would like to live like that... I think it is kind of freaky when a lot of faces without body... :/ But I think it just shows the characteristic of the person. House is suppose to make that person comfortable so if that person feels comfortable it is fine.. House is just a part of you and it shows their personality.

  6. His home is so different from my room. I don't like things unorganized, but I like his home. I can feel his love for his home and art, and I am so glad that he is Korean.

  7. I believe home is a place where you think comfortable a place that expresses who you are what you like and that in one way only you can understand. I believe there are thousands of ways to make a home a perfect environment for yourself but Chong Gon Byun has one of the most creatives ways I have seen

  8. wow. it's beautiful to see a connection so strong between a man and his home. He says he has a relationship with his art, and it's true. he takes his time to talk to them and clean them. It's so cool to see how dedicated he is to his home and art. People normally aren't that dedicated to something like how he is.

  9. That is pretty cool how he can take things people don't really care about and create something amazing. That would take a lot of dedication.

  10. Wow This man is really dedicated to art and what he does shows how much he loves it. Well he is right when he said that there is always space for a new thing to go in that room. It was pretty interesting to hear that he talked to them. When he said, ¨You can create a lot of stories a lot of stories by putting all this objects together,¨ he got me thinking that if you are in that room you can easily think of stories to write about. That room was really amazing and it must hide a lot of secrets.

  11. It was a really interesting video, I like the idea that his house is a work of art. All the things he has in his house look like a work of art even do they are pieces of junk or things that people threw away. I also agree with Mr. Byun that if he does give his love to the things it would scare him, because some of the things are kind off scary like the manikins.

  12. So often I think we confine our notions of art to safe, controlled spaces like museums, books, school, etc. One thing I like about this video is the way in which art spills into Mr. Byun's home, uncontrolled, yet welcomed and nurtured.

  13. Mr. Byun is so clear and dedicated to art that it really makes me think what is home. How he connects his art to home is amazing.

  14. This is actually a very good thing because i've heard that art is the strongest language in which a person can express themselves and Mr. Byun expressed it in a very big way.

  15. Through this guy, I can see that people living without any special type of wealth, but with a passion for a certain thing, can really live a comfortable life and even if their passion is junk, it becomes priceless and it becomes their special wealth.

  16. What does your house (or room) say about you?

  17. My blankets and my closet can whisper a lot about me, oddly enough. I have two blankets, thin cotton spreads made out of the same printed material-bright green smothered with cartoon flowers. My mom and me sewed them together when I was about eight, and I still have them today. I refuse to use or buy anything else in their place, and I'll probably take them with me until they disintegrate. One side of my closet is stuffed with unfolded clothes, many of them old t-shirts, and the other side is filled with odds and ends, and tons of papers that I picked up over the years. I don't want to throw them away, because I feel that if I do, I'll lose the memories that those papers hold. I guess you could say that I get really sentimental about stuff that I've picked up over my life; they emotional value for me.

On another note, I think that the music in this clip embodies the entire spirit of this man's house and his relationship with it. I was able to understand this spirit better as I listened to the music.

  18. Wow. This guy really likes art. Its interesting how he uses all that junk to create art. I think we can learn from him that old garbage can be used for much more than just filling up trash cans...
