How Can We Set A Goal?

Do you have a goal you want to accomplish by the end of this year, month, or even, day? Everybody has goals to make your life have more hope and accomplish what you want to do during your life. But sometimes, your goals do not get successful because your goals were too fantasy or you just chose too easy goal for yourself. It is always easy to set a goal because you could just say "I will get A+ in every class this year!", and never get even close to what you have said. It is never easy to achieve a goal that you always wish.
Today I was reading a blog post in a Korean blog and I read that goals should be much more than what you actually can accomplish. I partly agree to that statement because I think that if you have higher expectation for yourself, the chances are that you will work harder to achieve it, but I was partly disagreeing with the statement because if it is too unrealistic, the chances are higher for a person to give up, since the person might think it is "impossible" to achieve it.
What are your opinions on setting your goals? Do you think it is true that the goals should be more than what you actually can achieve, so you can push yourself? Or do you agree that goals should be setted realistically? and why have you made that choice?

  1. This video shows alot of good goals scored through history.
You have right about that goals, often are harder to achieve than you think.
I think we should push ourselves when we are going to reach a goal, because a goal is something we want to complete.

BTW. The 20th goal was scored by a norwegian.

  2. This Video it's so cool and has the best goals scored.
You are right we have to do our best every day, even if it's hard; lets try a little harder to do better in life.

  3. Setting a goal that is impossible to accomplish is impossible to accomplish. Simple as that. Setting a goal that is "realistic" means that you are setting a mission that YOU are capable of succeeding at. Obviously no one is actually able to achieve something they are not capable of doing. Pushing oneself to do "greater things" and actually achieving them is an indicative that they were able to do it all along. All they had to do was "try harder". Anyways, nice goals!

  4. As a soccer player all I can say is that I usually try to make unrealistic goals because that defines me on the turf. Usually I try to make bicycle kicks, and long distance shots not to mention all. The point in me telling you this is that I try to achieve my goals no matter what. I push myself very hard, so much that it ends up harming me.

  5. I think Amir summed it up. Once we break goals, it becomes easier for us to break them more often in the future.

On the other hand, I usually don't set goals for myself, and maybe that's why it takes me forever to do my homework or to get a task done. I think it's pretty difficult to get stuff done when you're both a perfectionist and a procrastinator. Setting realistic goals helps solve that.

I do believe that if you rely on goal setting too much, even if they are realistic, it is still detrimental. What is life if it is only a list of tasks to complete and goals to meet? I think it's all a balance.

  6. Actually I really try to make unrealistic goals for my future so that I can be challenging myself a little bit. For short term goals, I try my best to make realistic but little challenging goals. I think it is just different for everybody but that is just my way of setting my goals. I like what Amir says.
P.S. I can see that people like the video of goals... I was amazed on how they made it to their goals.

  8. Making goals you can never achieve is half the point of making them. A mans reach should exceed his grasp or whats a heaven for. The other half of the point is making goals you can reach without trying. It balances out that way.

  9. Although setting a "high" goal might be good, since you are challenging yourself, it might turn into arrogance. Dreaming of something impossible is a fantasy for us, but arrogant people might believe they can easily accomplish it, and enter a pit of depression and panic when they realize they can't.

  10. I would say that when setting goals you need to see first what you want to accomplish and set your mind to it. The goals might be hard or easy, but what matters is you commitment in working hard to achieve it. One thing to get in mind is the road to success or accomplishment isn't always as easy as it might seem. On your way you will encounter obstacles, that are meant to keep you from reaching the finish line, and its your job to overcome them.

  11. Settings goals are things which we must all strive to do. In order for a person to feel accomplished with his or her goals one must give all his effort.

  12. I totally agree with what Nicole says. With positive mentality, and much effort, even goals that seem impossible might be closer to reach.
