Doping or Skills?

How can a person as succesfull as Michael Phelps use drugs? Phelps is really good at what he does. The sixteen Olympic medals he has won in total is proof of that. He also became the most succesfull athlete in the Olympic Games of 2004 and 2008. Still, he dares to use drugs. He declared himself guilty when he was arrested for driving drunk and a picture of him using a bong, a device used for smoking tobacco or marijuana, was published. It is amazing how he did all that even when he has done so many accomplishments. Besides all that, I think it's pretty dumb how he ruined such a great reputation in that way, don't you think?

  1. Although it is better to admit than to lie, it would be better to not do something wrong at all. I think that is a very talented person wasted, the same as his reputation.

  2. I think it's extremely stupid of him to start doing drugs even after he had such a successful career as a swimmer. If I was so successful in something like that, I would avoid doing drugs. I think that maybe the fact of being famous is what drove him to do drugs. Or maybe he just wanted to call attention. If you think about it, you will notice that most of the cases of famous people being on drugs is because of this.

  3. Winning about sixteen Olympic medals is a amazing thing to do, but ruining it by driving while being drunk, or by consuming drugs, would totally ruin the reputation completely.

  4. I agree to what Sang Eui says. I do not know who came up with a thing called "drugs", but that person seriously ruined everybody's life. It totally ruined his life and other people's life too. Even though Phelps had admitted that he uses drugs, I think it is really bad for a person to use drugs.

  5. In defense of the athlete, I think that he might have done certain drugs to reliefe from the current stress he had, both physicaly and mentaly. Don't take me wrong, I in no moment intened to say that drugs are good! But anyways trashing a great career is a very awful thing to do because you not only set an example to your home country but to young athletes around the world. It's just sad to see great people do such awful things. :(

  6. I can believe that Michael Phelps would use drugs, The Michael Phelps!!!!! He is my swimming hero, I super admire so I can believe that he being the great athlete that he is would use drugs. But apart from that I agree to what Jorge said about how people ruin their careers by using drugs.

  8. Michael Phelps is one of the greatest swimmers of all times, which is why people admire him so much. But to ruin his life by using the drugs, he also ruins the lives of those people who admired him because they want to be just as good as him, and to hear about him doing that is really sad, because he was famous and even though he may have been pressured there ARE other methods of relieving yourself from stress.

  9. Michael Phelps has done so many accomplishments for his country. He has won various medals at the Olympic games and by this gained huge support and popularity in the United States. It is hard to believe that a person like him having so much would do such a thing like drugs.

  10. Like many other people, I also admire Michael Phelps and I was a bit disappointed when I heard about this. I think that using drugs was useless. If it was due to stress, like Sariah said, there are other ways to deal with stress.

  11. My gosh....I can't believe he used drugs!!! TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!!! It's not like he needed it, seriously. Now, in agreement to everyone's comments, his reputation is completely ruined, and if I may say so, the rest of his life as well.

  13. I very much agree with Jorge, people that use drugs do it as a way to reduce their anxiety or pressure, because face it, if you win that many Olympic medals that itself demonstrates that you have to go through some intense training, and if that picture is his, and he is doing a butterfly stroke, that itself is something hard. In my swimming class, that's the stroke I'm best at, but even then I get tiered by the second lap because its that demanding on your body. Not to mention, many great athletes do drugs!

  14. Wow... I really like Michael Phelps. Its a total shame he did that, but at least he confessed to it.

  15. I can agree with what Jorge said, maybe he started using them because of the stress swimming was causing him. However, a professional swimmer that would say no to drugs and learned how to deal with stress in healthier ways would be more admirable.

  16. I can't believe he did that. I remember in the summer Olympics of 08 when he beat this German dude by like 0.06 seconds winning the gold. He inspired me to stay in swim team a another year. And partly because my mom made me.

  17. Yeah, I think you're totally right, Gaby. While watching the 2008 Olympic Games of Beijing, I was really amazed of what Micheal Phelps did as a swimmer. And boy, he swims fast!!! Too bad that they found out he had used another source of power other than his own body to win gold medals he didn't really deserve.

  21. Unfortunately, sometimes fame might be cool, but it might also take you through the wrong path: in Michael Phelps' case- drugs.

  22. I agree with Robert, because now almost all of the famous people are fallowing the wrong path. Take for example Lindsey Lohan, she was a great movie actress and he life was stable, but once she started to gain more fame she changed. Now you see her and she is all messed up.

  23. Taking drugs is one of the worst decisions people with fame can do. There are sooo many other things he could do to relive his stress, but nooo, he just had to do the wrong thing and go ahead and do it. His life was great, everyone liked him, he had followers, etc.. But he threw it all away just with on thing named-drugs.

  24. I agree with Sariah. Famous people shouldn't even think of taking drugs or else they would destroy their career just like Michael Phelps.

  25. It is important to know how an athlete feels, and thinks in order to be a critic in other words be a professional athlete and then be a critic. Although drugs are bad justification is in between, the athlete probably went through to much stress at the time. He probably broke up with his girlfriend, probably lost someone important, or even probably lost a good opportunity for his professional life. All athletes do things for a reason. Also, throughout my multiple online articles read, I have realized that athletes are more vulnerable to drugs due to that playing any sport becomes addictive, like a drug. This is due to that athletes release a much higher concentration of epinephrine, which is natural adrenaline. This natural drug produced by athletes is produced constantly through any game. When athletes don't play what happens is that they need a substitution to the lack of epinephrine, subsequently they use drugs.

  26. I agree with what Jorge said that people just take in consideration to what the athlete are going through or feeling. We don't what they are going through, so we judge but is our judgement correct or incorrect?
