The Electric Eel Man

I found this video on one of my favorite blogs, Boing Boing. It shows a man named John Chang, an acupuncturist who can supposedly deliver shocks of electricity through his hands. He can deliver so much electricity that he is able to start a newspaper on fire.

For me, what is striking about this video is the comments that it generated on Boing Boing. If you click on the link, you will find an fairly long argument, back and forth, between people who both think this guy is faking (that he can not set newspaper on fire with his hands) and people who think his ability is real.

What is it about this video causes so many people to question John Chang's ability? Are you convinced? Why or why not? Furthermore, what would sufficiently convince you that his ability is real?

  1. Wow thats so cool, how did he do that? It's the first time a see person acually show super natural activities. It really make you wonder whether it is a power that only he has or there are more who can do this kinds of things.

  2. That is truly amazing. I totally believe this is real, however, I wonder how he does it. I know there are electric charges in your brain maybe he transfers the energy into his hand. I was a little skeptical at first then he set a newspaper on fire. After that i really wished i was John Chang.

  3. I don't think he is faking. I believe that if researched, a scientific explanation could turn up, and like he said, practice could make it possible.

  4. I read some of the comments on Bing Bing, and people where saying that this guy wrapped something inside the newspaper, and made it catch on fire. However i don't believe that, i really believe people could actually do this.
Another commend that says "Is the flash in the bottom-right at about 3:17 like a spark from a wire or something maybe?" by Jason Kleinberg, i answer to it that its the camera's flash.

  5. Even though it looks really cool what he does, it looks really fake. Probably, people doubt about his ability because it sounds just too incredible to be true. I don't think there's anything he could do to make me believe him.

  6. Wow he has some skills x-men style. The ability to project electricity through someones hands is incredible, you could charge your computer while using it. The only bad side is you would have to spend 18 years meditating.

  7. I would love to know how to light my homw...I mean, cook my popcorn. Although this is very cool, based on the looks of the hairstyles of the scientist, i can't believe no one has researched if this vid is real or not. If it was, i think i would have heard about it before.

  8. I definitely think its true, how he does it, mystery! But if you noticed from minute 3:19 and 3:20 their is like a small energy spark or flare appear a little bit towards the left side from where his hand is! That to me looks like electricity!

  9. This actually makes some sense because we, human beings can receive shocks of electricity from touching other people. His ability might be this gust that in a stronger way.

  10. I think that this video is interesting. At first, I thought that this was a joke, but when I saw the newspaper set on fire, there is no questioning how he that. It is true. I totally agree Min Hee.

  11. Yeah, I think Minhee is right! When I saw the video and the capacity of releasing electricity, I remember an experiment my dad showed me. You rub a pen on your hair and put it on top of tiny scraps of paper. Try it and you'll see how awesome it is.

  12. Min Hee actually has a great point. That might be the answer for this mystery, which some people are unwilling to believe.

  13. You know I wonder how long it took him to master such a skill and if he can do that, what else is the human body capable of doing aside from emit electricity: Create fire, manipulate matter, levitation, telekinesis. I may be getting too ahead of myself, but still my point about what the human body is capable of is beyond our common understanding.

  15. To have static electricity you have to rub against something static. Unless he found a way to generate that, I don't think it is possible. Even if he could do it, since when have you received a static shock from touching paper?

  16. SO everyone can do that but how meditation? or concentration ? well i think it's an ability they had and they practice to be better. Its a cool video thumbs up!
PS: The Electric Eel Man looks like Jet Lee. LOL

  17. At the beginning of the video, he is doing acupuncture. Even there, when the man's hands start moving, it looks like he really is using small shocks to help his patient relax better.

  18. When he turns the newspaper into flames, you can actually see that he is using a certain force from his body in order to light it up. In other words, you can see his effort on creating an electric shock or current.
