Phone Bloks

by Kelly cs

The cameras on phones can be pretty awful. Whenever I try to zoom in the picture gets really blurry and has really low quality. My bother has a fake camera for kids, its bright orange, extra large, and really grimy and even that takes better pictures. It even has more editing options built in, and you don't have to use apps to edit a picture. So lets say that you like photography, and you want to take high quality photos but you don't want to carry a camera with you all the time. If you are that type of person then would you be ok with sacrificing better speakers for a better camera? I bet a lot of you would. Or lets say you want extra storage because you have a ton of large gaming apps. Odds are you would be ok with sacrificing a camera for extra space. Before phones have never let you do that, you get a standard model all with the same features regardless of your need for a phone. Wouldn't it be great if you could customize your phone to make it suit your needs? This is where phone bloks comes in (yes, bloks I guess misspelling it makes it cooler or more hip). Phone bloks were created by a group of three men who wanted a customizable phone, that would reduce waste and not need to be replaced just because of a broken screen. It was later bought by Motorola (Google). It is basically a base, and you can customize the hardware so it suits your needs. They are currently working on getting funding and getting it developed. Google hopes to send out build your own phone blok kits sometime in the next few years. You just replace parts as needed, you can even by screens of different quality or to replace broken ones. My ideal phone would have tons of space, an ok camera, and not focus too much on texting, and have a great browser, that hopefully works with adobe and flash stuff. What would your customizable phone be like?

  1. This actually seems really cool. I wonder if they really do work and will catch on or if this phone will fade away. I think it would please many people if this actually worked, me included. I think if I could customize mine it would have a good camera and enough storage for many, many books.

  2. This is really good amazing invention. I really want one of this. If it gets ruin I just need to buy one blok but if I had an Iphone and got ruined I needed to buy a new complete Iphone, which is more expensive. If I could customize my own phone blok, it would have good camera, fast internet, and enough storage for apps, books, and music.

  3. WOW!!! That is so awesome! I want one so badly. It is so interesting that it is a good idea to buy them. But if we buy them we need to get rid of the other phone we had. Making the electronic waste increase for this new phone. That is the reason why companies created this phone, to stop electronic waste!!

  4. Actually, I think it's a really cool idea. It would be really cool if companies sell it. Unfortunately, I think the actual phone would be really expensive and the updates too. Anyways, I think it's a really good idea and if they decide to finally create it, I would save money to buy it. I'm fine with just a a good camera, enough storage, a fast internet connection and capability to reproduce high quality videos and music.

  5. Wow! What a super neat and very smart product! I think that is so clever of them (and even just someone in general) to have come up with a very innovative and creative product that appears to fix so many of the problems that our regular phones are now giving us! I heard a fact once (which I'm not sure is entirely credible) but regardless, the face was that every 15 seconds an iPhone is thrown away! And that's just iPhones! Imagine all of the other electronic waste that is thrown away so often. I think it's wonderful that some people got together to and came up with this idea that will probably reduce so much more waste than we can even comprehend! That's awesome.

  6. If I'm not mistaken, Google has named this Project Ara. According to what I've read about it so far, it is due to be released early next year. It is supposedly a phone targeted to the entire population, a phone that can be accessible by people from all economic strata. The only true disadvantage I see with this project is that the phone will essentially be held together with magnets; a combination between conventional magnets and electromagnets to be specific. I don't know how effective this system will be, and if they put some sort of screw as shown in the video, the customization of the device will basically lose most of its aimed versatility. It will certainly be interesting to see these electronic devices early next year, as long as Project Ara is released as planned.

  7. That would be really handy. This might reduce electric waste greatly to just a few items. Although I doubt many people have heard of it as they are so preocuppied with looking towards the next Iphone. It's possible that different companies could have different bloks. It's just a really interesting idea.

  8. I saw this news before but I thought this phone was cool but I thought this phone won't help it reduce the amount of electric devices that are thrown away because you need new blocks to decorate your phone you might throw your old blocks... But I think this is cool idea.

  10. I have seen this news before done by Laura Farias. I thought this is a really cool new phone. You can recycle the old blocks instead of throwing them away. I think this is better than the iphone because you can decorate your phone instead of changing cases everytime.

  11. I saw this when Laura did a news story on this. I think its really cool and the idea is awesome. Now, they just need to make it and start selling it. I bet a lot of people would buy it and they would like it. I know that I would want this phone.

  12. I once did a Torch article on this. I think that this idea is great! I'd definitely buy it! You buy it once, and you save a lot of money simply buy upgrading each blok that needs upgrading instead of buying a new phone altogether. Plus, with the less waste it produces, it's financially and environmentally friendly!

  13. This is so cool!! I always used to think that I wanted to change Ipad's camera because it was horrible!!! I think this thing is much better than to buy other phone because it much more cheaper and It doen't waste anything to make brand new product.

  14. I saw this video that other day and in fact it seemed very interesting, there is so much waste in this world I just don't understand were it lies? People are always getting rid of the 6 month old phone and getting the latest, this is a very neat idea that all phone companies should value.
