Fun is great!

Biographical Note:
Hi. My name is Josh, hence the title. Dictionaries burn my hands, I hate homework, I love the school lunches, I get iPod cuts, and I only have three pencils in my pocket. I used to have a quaker bird (parrot) that would sit on my shoulder and do disgusting stuff, but when I was at my friends house, the bird bit my dad's finger. So my mom got mad and gave him away to the bird pound. And those were the three most fun days in my life.

Fun is Great!

by Josh

Fun is great, but in my house, fun is too much of a privilege for my mom and dad to handle. Like the other day, I had basically no homework, so I used my time to play as much video games as I could get into a day. But of course, when mom walked in, it was too much fun. So now that I could not do that, I decided to protest by acting super-bored and staring at walls. I have to say my mom scored on that one, because protesting was fun, but still, it's like saying, "Oh, you're having fun?!? Okay, ten days in jail."
I never tell my mom that I'm bored, because she always makes me read a book. I have nothing against books, but I have everything against being forced to read a book I have already read 15 times. I think it's because they're (my parents) are jealous. If I can rot my brains more than they can, I suffer for it. But then again, every parent has something against the TV.

Not all fun is in video games though, pranks, man, I can go a million ways with that one, but the tickle your nose and shaving cream one is the winner for me. Who knew a little shaving cream could be so much fun? But since this was in my house, I got in trouble for using too much shaving cream.

And also, like in theme parks: I was about to go on the ride that scares the recently eaten food out of my stomach, and my mom said, "take your sister with you!" And I knew what that meant, no fun. To make matters worse, it was on my birthday. How cruel.

Another cruel thing is when I get a new toy, so my parents go crazy. Where do I start when they get that kind of green light? They search for every possible flaw they can conjure up:

"Josh!! I told you a million times to hang up your towel!!!"

"Sorry mom, I hang it up right now."

"You can't play with your new toy for a week."

I guess I have to stick to books.

  2. Josh's writing is just great! During the whole story, he keeps you stuck to it, since he gives some really good details. In fact, they help Josh's writing because it easily interests people. Josh, I congratulate you for such a great piece of writing!!!

  4. Once, when I was six or seven, I stole some money from my sister. Clearly I wasn't a very good thief, because my parents found out. Their punishment for me was "jail," which meant that they took ALL of the toys out of my room and confined me there for the entire day. I was only let out for meals.

While trapped in my room, I discovered a quarter that my parents had missed on their room check. It was my only source of entertainment. I must have spent an hour and a half rolling that quarter back and forth along the top of my dresser until it dropped off the edge, directly into my open mouth, and down my throat.

  5. Josh, sorry to hear that you get restrained on your toys, and fun activities. I like how you seek to employ pranks, thats one thing I enjoy. You know a good trick would be to use video games in favor. What I mean is, tell your parents video games tought you something that way your parents can think twice on letting you play more :D hahahaha.

  6. Hahaha Jorje! I have tried that before. Their response is "Okay, what did you learn that was educational?" My response: "Uhhhhh, nothing, i'll just get back to reading."

  7. When I was nine, I had a friend named Brandon. Every time his mom asked him to wash the dishes, he would smash one. Soon she no longer asked him to do the dishes. Josh! Protest by messing up the house. Soon enough they'll be glad you're complacently playing video games.

  8. hahaha thats a good idea Mr. AB! I like this piece of writing Josh wrote, because its true. Parents do that alot! What You shoud do instead of staring at walls is walk around the house back in forth infront of your parents. Oh and like Mr. AB said, You should figure out a way to mess up the house with books, or rip them, that way, lie Mr. AB's friend, you would no longer have to read them!

  9. oh man i totally agree with josh. whenever i said to my mom that i am bored, she always tells me to read a book. I hate to read books but my mom always tells me to read a book. Also I hate when the parents say do something, do something, or says "take your brother with you!" Its so annoying. But its good that my parent is not against TV hahaha!

  10. Seriously you people!!!! Why are you soooooo obsessed with video games??? I just don´t get it! And books are awesome, by the way! You dissappear from wherever you are, and you start to believe the whole story is about you. Some video games are even based on books! Just ask Bryan...

  11. Don't listen to Arige! She's on an anti-literacy campaign! She's trying to brainwash everyone. I recommend breaking dishes.

Ji Eun, I recommend more reading and less DDR.

  12. hahaha Josh.
When you are bored, think of iPad 2 or work and get money for the iPad 2

    ReplyDelete
  13. iPad 2...
I must say though. It would be much easier to imagine about it when he has used one and knows much about it.
Josh, just hold a book and act like it's an iPad 2.
Imagine you downloaded a book into it and re reading it.
That might make the gong easier.

  15. I like reading books but I just dont like when I choose books that is boring. But I really like books mr!!!!-_-

  16. It´s all a matter of perspective Josh. You like books or you don´t. That´s life. It´s just all about how you retaliate. You can break dishes or stare at walls or fight with David. What i do is eat if i am bored. If i am full i use bribery and foul tricks to get electronics. Also, if you are confined to do your homework act like your having the best of times doing it. You will get your homework done faster Yuo might confuse your Mom to the point of letting you have a little bit more fun everyday.

  17. Adding to Ji Eun's comment, whenever I tell my dad that I am bored, he hands me a newspaper and says "Here, circle all of the r's, n's, and p's that you can find." Was that his source of entertainment when he was little?

    ReplyDelete
  18. hahaha morgan you should never say i am bored in front of your daddy!! circling all of the r's, n's, and p's would make me sick!!!!!!!

  19. whoa, the weird thing to think about is that DOES boredom really exist? personally, at least for me, boredom is more of a choice. and because it is a choice (for me) i choose never to be bored. its impossible for me to get bored, because i have the world to explore, inside and outside of my mind. i believe that that can be applied to other emotions/habits, such as being annoyed, but that is MUCH harder. i guess its just all a matter of perspective. another thing to think about is if you do believe boredom does exist, maybe boredom can lead people to take action, and when that action is directed in a positive way it can do tons of good.

    ReplyDelete
  20. EDIE!! I had never thought about it in that way. There is always something we can do instead of lying around and simply being "bored."

    ReplyDelete
  21. hahaha i totally agree with Adriana!!!! Actually, I always get bored even though i am doing something that I like to do. That's so weirdo!!!! So My mom recommends me to read a book or do a math problem!!!! I like to be bored... I think it is my favorite thing to say "I am bored.." All the time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I think that Edie is totally right with what she said about boredom. It's our decision if we get bored or have fun. I personally believe that the way to get out of boredom is to simply do something productive, enjoyable, fun, and challenging. I would put those as the guidelines I must follow when I'm bored but I'm not really sure if I use them all the time. Maybe I get bored rarely, but when I get bored, I am REALLY bored. Anyways, at least on school days and weekends, I always have something to do: homework, play with my brother, play tennis, and in weekends, go to the movies with my family, watch soccer matches, etc. I guess I'm not so bored since I always have something to do, and if not, I easily find something to do.

  23. Hey Josh,

When you say "play as much video games," I think it should be "play as many video games," because "much" only refers to singular objects like "eat as much pasta as I can," and "video games" is plural.

What video games do you like to play? What rides do you like to go on at the amusement park? What new toys do your parents like to complain about? I want details! :)

My parents never told me to stop having fun, but strangely enough I spent all my time over at my friend Eric's house, and his mom was all about getting us to stop playing video games and do things that were worthwhile like going outside or taking a walk. We could have just gone to my house and done whatever we wanted but instead we always listened to her (after a little complaining). I guess in some way we liked knowing that when we were playing video games we were really SUPPOSED to be doing something else.

Telling us to go read a book wouldn't have worked though. We both loved books. Actually, I used to drive Eric's mom crazy because whenever I'd walk to his house I'd always bring a book with me and read on the way...even when I was crossing the steet! She thought that was dangerous for some crazy reason :)

  24. The shaving cream prank?
oh boy, its hard to get right
We were in Morgan's house and tried that on Sofia.
    But here's the thing,
Sofia kept rubbing her face with the other hand and since we couldn't find any shaving cream we had to use Moose.
Let me tell you, it disappeared from her hand in about 45 seconds so we had to constantly pile up Moose on her hand which made so much noise it woke her up.
We tried it like 15 times that night.
    15 tries
    15 fails

  25. Hahaha
Your quotes are same as what my mom always says to me.
She always says to organize stuff and help her but it takes long to help my mom!hahah

  26. Mr. AB!!! im not trying to brainwash everyone.... your the one that gave me the idea!! hahaha..

  27. i really enjoyed reading this story it was detail in the way i could relate with him on what my parent would do when am bored or when I dont pick up stuff and punish me for such a dumb reason
P.S shaving cream tricks dont work if the person is awake but acts like shes sleeping

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sofia, why would you pretend like you're sleeping if you know they're trying to play a trick on you.

I'm with Edie, I have said for years that I'm never bored.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm always bored... well except when I'm actually working on something. But I'm really into what I love to read. But there are times when I'm not actually bored... When I'm with my friends chatting, or playing on computer... that makes me very, VERY entertained... but I think reading a book that is interesting is not bad. What if you read about tv or comics... I guess you will be entertained.
I agree that it is not good to do bad stuff like stealing and getting against your mom and dad, is the WORST choice after getting against your teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jajaja! This story was great! And it also describes how a parent is...I understand how you feel... They cannot see you doing somethign fun because they start to tell you things and then they can even ground you which is not fun at all. Yeah and I also agree with Ha Nuel because being in the bad side of your parents is never good.

  31. This essay was very funny!! You are absolutely right!! parents are almost always trying to see what they can do to ruin fun!! they usually do that on the days that you want the least to be bothered!! I think that they do it because they think that it's the best for us, but, if you ask me, parents usually don't understand the term "what is best for my son or daughter"

    ReplyDelete
  32. Josh what an essay this stuff gets right to the point with the whole parent problem and games. One way one of my friends got around this was actually to hook his father on the game(because mothers are harder to hook) and use him as an excuse. It doesn't work all the time or many times but its a method. Also you can try gloves for the dictionary or just use one of those technological ones.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like this essay especially because you really describe how parents are against fun things that you think is funny but they don't. You are also right about how parents don't like for us to see TV because every time my mom sees me watching TV and having fun she says, "Nicole, go do something else or if no TV for you the rest of the day." The weird thing is that they can watch as much TV they want but we can!

Anyway, I really enjoyed your essay Josh it was really funny and entraining. Keep up the good work and I hope I get to read another one of your essays.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This essay took out some of the stress I has piled up from yesterday, for how funny and real it is. I just hope that if any parent reads this he/she sill change and let his/her child enjoy his/her childhood and have fun in a moden way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. All of you go for what we call "fun". But guys, we must admit, not everything in this life is fun and spare time. We must use our time wisely, prioritize! But hey, I'm not against video games at all! I LOVE VIDEO GAMES, but I still decide to even do extra homework because ultimately, you'll get more spare time at the end! Trust me, its true. With hardship, comes ease. Work first, then play.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I did that because i had a trick on them MR.AB.
when they put the whip cream in my hand i would through it back at them so they got the trick not me!

    ReplyDelete
  37. haha edie! i never thought of things like that its a different way of observing the concept of boredom.

Josh....you are so full of life. you talk about the craziest but most interesting things. One thing I would do is to do good things to my parents and then from all the good deeds I do, they will let me do what ever I want, especially doing chores.

  38. Hanuel, You are right, there are many things that get us bored, but at the same time there exist many things that make us feel good. Like you said, it's fun to be with your friends. Do you want to know why? When we share a bond with someone and feel comfortable being with these people, we release a chemical from our body called oxytosen. This is what makes us feel good and comfortable with others. Keep your friends close.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah...Amir. I like your point of view as well as Hanuel's. It is good to have friendship to accompany you.
Nobody will ever do things as good as a good friend will. And like a song says: "That's what friends are for!!"
