Why do we get nervous?

Hey! I wanted to share this video with you guys because yesterday at Writer's Workshop class, we had to present any M2 that we have written (By the way, all their stories were really, really good guys). I have always been a shy person so I get really nervous when it's time to present in front of people. Everything was okay until Mr. Steven said that it was my turn to present. Suddenly, I felt like my hands and legs were shaking and my heart was pumping really hard. I thought that it was going to go away when I by the time I will sit in the chair, but instead, I got even more nervous. After my presentation I was wondering, why do we get nervous? Why does being in front of people or doing something that make us nervous makes our body react in that way? So, I decided to find a quickly answer for my question and I found this! Everything it's about chemical reactions in our body. The video says that if we imagine ourselves being focused, thinking positively and being confident, can help us overcome nervousness.

The truth is that I have tried this tactics before and they helped me. At least to keep myself standing hehe.

  1. This is so interesting. I am used to the small environment here in equity and sometimes I have to give speeches at church which is a much bigger environment. I get super nervous and everyone notices. It's embarrassing, but I'll try the techniques shown in this video. Maybe they will help.

  2. I have tried a lot of technics, but the don't help me at all. Sometimes I get confidence, but I still get nervous. I want to try doing this. I am hoping for it to work. I never got how the mental imagery worked. It is real cool how everything happens in our body without noticing it.

  3. This is very interesting though there are some words that I still don't understand. Now I understand why do we get nervous. I usually get nervous when there are lots of people staring at me. I get nervous when they call me to the principal's office. :P

  5. This was really cool! Thanks for sharing Belen! I think this will be helpful to know now next time I get nervous. And by the way, your story was amazing! And to be honest I couldn't even tell that you were nervous. You did a great job! I think that nervousness is such a common thing among everybody it will be helpful to know why we actually get nervous. :)

  6. Getting nervous is not something bad at all in my opinion. Although being nervous feels weird sometimes, I think performing well while being nervous makes you a lot more confident for the future. You might be nervous the first time you do something, and gain enough confidence so that the next time you do the same thing, you will not even think about it. With regards to the video, it is interesting to know the background of why we get nervous and what reactions it causes in our bodies.

  7. I can completely sympathize with you about become nervous! Trust me. I know that it is hard reading things in front of people or presenting something publicly. But it's good to remember that we can overcome this nervousness! By the way, when you were reading your M&M, I didn't even think that you seemed nervous! Not only where you completely calm and collected, but you also had a wonderful story! Great job!

  8. I would say that getting nervous is something that one can be blamed for, some people get nervous, some people don't. The benefits of not getting nervous and becoming confident is really grandiose, and that is why people who are actually nervous should work hard to become more and more confident with one self.

  9. There's a theory that some neuroscientists believe that thoughts have gravity. Although that amount of gravity is minimal, stuff can happen just by thinking about it. This video sort of supports that: by controlling your thoughts into thinking you're not nervous, you won't get nervous.

  10. There is an old Tibetan saying that the monks done there believe in. "If the problem can be solved there is no need to worry about it. f the problem cannot be solved then there is no use worrying about it." I take this to heart whenever i get nervous about something although when its on the spot and sudden its hard to remember that.

  13. Something that ALWAYS affects me is nervousness. Before it was horrible, to the point that I couldn't stop shaking. I have notice now that the more I speech or do anything in public, the less nervous I get. I haven't tried any of these techniques, not aware at least, but I think they might help as well.

  14. This video seems really useful for people that suffers with nervousness. I once had a hard time on presenting or talking in front of people, but practice helped me a lot. This video is really good, but I think when you practice a lot in speaking in front of people, you soon get used to it and you feel less nervous and maybe gain confidence.

  15. I'm always the person that suffers from being nervous, especially when I have to speak publicly or do something that might change my life. I think there is a way to get around the nervousness once you know why you are nervous and how to control it. It's interesting to see how your brain works!

  16. I actually have the same issue you do. I get insanely nervous every time I have to talk in front of a large audience. A long time ago, I took a course from Dale Carnegie. At the end, we all had to give a speech in front of everyone. It was the most envarasing moment of my life! From the moment I stood on the podium with all my peers and their families watching, my legs shook like a snake. Everyone was looking at my legs instead of me. It was horrible.

  17. I think that mind has a lot of control over our feelings and thoughts. I think that controlling our our thoughts will help us not get nervous. As it was said in the video, if you repeat that multiple times, in the end you will truthfully not be nervous. I think we get nervous because there are thoughts in our subconcious telling us ¨what if we make a mistake? what if they laugh at us?¨, etc. That´s why thoughts are so important. What I do to stop my nervousness is take deep breaths and think positively. That always helps. Thanks for sharing.
