Videogames are Art

Video games are an important part of society today. Videogames can allow for tons of fun and have created thousands of jobs.

But videogames are not only running around and killing people or eating white dots with a cheese like creature being chased by ghosts. Videogames have allowed various artists to express themselves in ways they never thought they could. That’s why, on March 16th, the Smithsonian museum located in Washington D.C. opened a new exhibition dedicated to videogames as a form of art.

Do you find making videogames a form of art a good thing or should it stay on the shelves of us gamers? And just for the heck of it, whish is YOUR favorite videogame?

  1. I think making video games is actually form of art. Because in the game, you can express your imagination through different graphics and also, you can share your thoughts with other people through planning different settings and plots.

  2. I think video games are a good form of art because they help you express yourself and you can do this imaginary world that expresses everything you want to express. Though I think making video games is more complex than, lets say, portraits, though other people might think differently.

  3. Although video games are fun and almost everybody likes to play them, I don't believe that their entirely good. The reason is that videos, at one point can become an addiction. This can result in kids failing grades and them not being able to socialize or interact with real people. Because they have become accustom to talking virtually with other, and they have spend countless of hour playing games while they could have been outside talking with people. Another thing that video games does its that it makes kids not do exercise, so they at one point gain weight.

So video games are both good and bad at the same time. That doesn't mean that you don't have to play video games. You can, but you have to find a balance.

  4. Well, it might be an art, because you need a lot of creativity to do them, but I wouldn't specifically concider it an art.

  5. Games are a form of entertainment and therefore a form of art. Whether the video game is appealing is subjective like most art. And touching on what Nicole said games are addictive because they were made that way. Companies have entire divisions devoted just to making their games addictive by stimulating certain parts of the brain.

  6. I've always struggled with the relationship between video games and art. Of course I think there is a lot of artistry that goes into the creation of video games, like the way they look and sound, and of course these qualities are art. Nevertheless, I always wonder if the game itself, when stripped of its artistic trappings, could still be regarded as art. I suppose it could, if you define art as anything that uses tools and technology in an ordered way to subject people to certain feelings, thoughts or experiences. Is that how we're defining art here?

  8. I play video games and I like them. In literature, I am writing a speech about it. Video games are art and are also productive because they can give you more imagination and creativity, and can also teach you more words in vocabulary. Strategy games can also make you smarter, and lets you use your brain.
