Java

During the summer, I went to a tech camp where I had a course on Java. Java is free, popular programming language that is used for many different purposes, like games. Games like Minecraft and Runescape are all made using Java. A cool thing is that Java is cross-platform, meaning that if you write a program on one operating system, like OS X, you don't have to convert it or anything for if you want to run it on Windows. I spent one week in the camp, and I successfully made a calculator with Java.
Screenshot of the calculator I made while at camp.
Programming is hard, that's one thing you should take note of. But I found a website that teaches Java for free. Check it out: www.java-programming.info

I'd love to see the stuff you guys make with Java.

  1. Oh that is so cool! This program is already installed in my computer but I didn't know that we could use this program to make those things! That is super cool! I would like to try making one but I think it is going to be really hard to make one. Nice job!!

  2. This program looks cool, but I think it would be a little difficult to those who are not good with technological stuffs. It would be good for me to learn how to use this..., but if I already have programs like calculator in my computer, why should I learn this? Everything you can make in here, I think already exists as an program that you can download in certain web sites. Is it really worthy to learn for normal people?

  3. How difficult is it to learn? The closest thing I ever came to programming was using python. So... I know nothing, but it seems very interesting.

  4. this is some pretty cool stuff, Arturo. Not to mention the title for your calculator is pretty sweet. What's the story behind it?

  5. Congratulations Arturo. That's really amazing! I've always wanted to learn how to code since the future of our world is mostly electronic. It is rather incredible how developers make apps that combine simplicity for completing a certain task with a nice UI (User Interface) and an appealing design. Like you said, what I really like about Java is that it's designed for cross-platform use.

  6. I might check that website out next time I need something to do. Learning it might not benefit me right now but it could come in handy and seems fun to learn. Going to a programming camp must have been super cool!

  7. Its cool how you have learned how to do this. You mentioned that you finally managed to program a calculator but you did not say how long it took you. Was it by the end of camp or did you have to continue it afterwards?

  8. Thats awsome, i'm also interested in computer programming but that program that i used that C++ coding, it was hard. I dont know much of Java script, but i heard that it was easier that C++, keep up with your programming.

  9. It is very interesting how java works. One of the good things about java is that can be used in any platform, or in any software. Ive always wanted to use java or any other computing program to create. well, nice one.

  10. I've always wanted to learn how to use Java but it looked so hard that I just didn't do it. I would like to learn how to use Java to make many things such as your calculator.

  11. In case anyone's wondering here's the story behind the title of my program. Back when I was at camp, at the end of the week there would be prizes that you would win by raffle. You could put in as many of your raffle tickets as you wanted in a prize, and you would get these tickets from the counselors for good behavior and all that. What happened was that all the kids in my group wanted one prize which was an opportunity to give one of the counselors a shaving cream pie to the face, and we really wanted to do it to our group's counselor who's nickname is "Afro". So we started a little campaign called "Pie the 'Fro 2013" to get other kids to give us their tickets so that we could pie Afro. One interesting thing about Afro is that he was a beta tester for Skyrim. You can find his real name in the credits of the game.
